Velella velella
At the Carlsbad beach, April 20, 2024
Velella velella is called “by-the-wind-sailor”. It is not a jellyfish but is related to jellyfish. It is free-floating and generally harmless to humans, but some may have mild skin irritation. They feed on plankton and serve as food for sunfish, purple snails, and sea blue dragons.
